Blog EntryAbout love, by OlgaMar 7, '09 8:45 PM
for everyone
My friend Olga has a way with words.

Read on:

A boppy song is playing in the car, and she asks me: "Mommy, what does it mean 'fall in love'?"

I think. How can I explain it to her? She's five. How can I describe to her the sudden and inexplicable singling out of one particular person, his shimmering presence eclipsing everything else? Everyone else. The quickening of the pulse. The dilating of the pupils. The shiver that passes through in his very presence. The constant need to be near, to see, to be seen. The nervous energy that controls, just as things begin to slip irrevocably out of control. The re-shifting of the universe, the change in the center of gravity. The heightening of the senses. The brightening of the colors. The special meaningfulness of sounds, of words... The magic of coincidence. The danger of believing.

How can I explain to her what it's like to physically will the phone to ring, and when it does, the shrill sound of it splits the time in two - the before and after...? And if it doesn't...

How can I make her understand that falling in love is not unlike falling sick? No rules apply. The sweet madness of being in love is a painful, exhausting thing that can be healed by time alone, and sometimes not even by that...

Someday she'll know... And when she does, she'll tell me that it is I who doesn't understand...

Thank, you Olga, for saying what I feel. And for letting me share this.

Blog EntryAuthor Reading DayMar 4, '09 9:32 PM
for everyone
Today was author reading day in Kendra's classroom. The kids got a book "published" about what they want to be when they grow up, written in their own words, and with a picture. Today all parents were invited to come see their kids read their page.

She read clearly, at the right volume, and without hesitation. And she only had one word misspelled! I'm so proud of her!

Today was also lab setup day for the last anatomy exam of the year. We let the students use the lab for review until 4:30 pm, then we go in and set it up. By the time I got there, we had 5 medical students, my friend Sylvia (the pathologist) and my boss in the lab. The med students are in their 4th year and doing their elective with us, and man, were they enthusiastic! Their energy was very contagious. They kept calling me to check on structures to make sure they were tagging the right things. That would have usually gotten old really fast, but they brought so much good energy into the room, I didn't mind it at all.

All in all, a very good day.

I'm going to bed now
